点评：GUM is much more than a shopping destination. Located directly on Red Square, this magnificent historic department store is an architectural landmark in its own right and one of the most elegant places to experience Moscow.
The first thing that catches your attention is the building itself. Its grand façade, intricate architectural details, enormous glass roof, elegant galleries, and beautifully designed interiors create an atmosphere that feels closer to a historic European palace than a conventional shopping centre.
Walking through GUM is an experience even if shopping isn’t on your agenda. The architecture is stunning, and the natural light filtering through the famous glass ceiling creates a beautiful setting for photography. The long galleries, ornate details, polished floors, and carefully designed displays make every corner worth exploring.
What makes GUM particularly interesting is the way it combines Moscow’s heritage with contemporary luxury. Alongside its historic character, you’ll find premium brands, stylish boutiques, cafés, restaurants, and beautifully presented food and dessert counters.
I visited AVA café and had some good snacks with a gimlet. The experience was amazing.
But the best part is their famous ice cream stores on the ground floor. It always has a queue, but it’s fun to wait for your turn.
The building also carries considerable historical importance. GUM has been part of Moscow’s commercial and cultural landscape for generations, and its location opposite the Kremlin and beside St. Basil’s Cathedral makes it an integral part of the Red Square experience.
Even if you’re not interested in shopping, I would strongly recommend visiting GUM simply to appreciate its architecture, history, and atmosphere. It is particularly beautiful during the festive season when the interiors and central areas are decorated with lights and installations.
For me, GUM perfectly represents Moscow’s ability to preserve its past while embracing modern luxury.
