点评:Visited alone on a brief visit to the city on Tuesday 28th April 2026, attending the 45 minute guided tour at 3.50 pm, which was the final tour of the day.
I have always loved caves and how humans have used them over the years and really enjoyed learning about the history of Nottingham’s network of caves, all of which are man made. The tour gave a fascinating insight into how cleverly the caves were used, how people respected the boundaries of their neighbours and how, during times of extreme poverty, people returned to using the caves as dwellings - hopefully not something we’ll see happening again, but you never know!
The caves also show how the city has developed over time and how our knowledge and understanding of history has also grown and developed over time.
Our guide was very knowledgeable, but if you can’t go at the same time as the guided tours, you can go round with an audio tour through the well lit caves.
Due to the nature of caves, this is not an accessible experience, as there are steps, narrow paths, uneven floors and low ceilings throughout. Sensible footwear is essential.
Standard entry costs £11, with slightly lower prices for concessions and children between 5 - 17. Under 5s go free. You can also get a combined ticket for a family, and for visiting the National Justice Museum, which manages the caves and is just five minutes away.
Entry to the caves is tucked away underneath the raised tramway. If walking from the train station via Broad Marsh, you go underneath, turn left and it is to the left, at the end of the skate park area. If coming from above, go down the stairs at the side of Nottingham Contemporary (art gallery), past Blends coffee shop, down some more steps and immediately turn right.
Booking in advance recommended via their website.
