点评:This iron manufacturing site, active from just before the Revolutionary War to the mid-1800's, offers a glimpse of everyday history. There is a visitor center, with informative displays, examples of products made at the site, and a little shop, and several historic buildings to explore, in addition to the furnace itself. Check out the schedule of programs before you go! On a recent summer weekend, we were able to make a solid afternoon of it, attending a talk, a tour, and a hands-on program, in addition to exploring on our own--all completely free of charge. The hands-on molding and casting program (offered twice a day throughout the weekend, when I was there) even gives you a small souvenir, a miniature plaster replica of a stove door like they used to manufacture out of cast iron. Kids can also complete an activity book and get a little wooden badge, free. Located a little under two hours from Gettyburg, and under an hour from Valley Forge, Hopewell gets a lot less traffic than those more famous sites, allowing for a relaxed experience and high-quality interaction with staff who have plenty of time for your questions. Be ready for a bit of walking; the furnace is located on a steep hill (which was important for the manufacturing processes carried out here), and the restored workers' houses are a short walk from the furnace site.
