点评：When I was growing up, drag racing was an acknowledged sport on every street corner and Don Garlits was the one who made it popular. Known world-wide to drag racing fans as "Big Daddy" and considered the godfather of drag racing, he was a pioneer in the field, perfected the rear-engine Top Fuel Dragster and was the first drag racer to top 200 miles per hour for 1/8 mile and the first to officially surpass the 170, 180, 200, 240, 250 and 270-mile-per-hour marks in the quarter-mile. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1989 and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1997. Today, visitors can meet the 94-year-old Garlits at his Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing at 13700 Southwest 16th Avenue in Ocala, Florida, adjacent to I-75. Opened in 1984, this American automobile museum chronicles the history of drag racing and features over 90 racing cars in the Drag Racing building and over 50 in the Antique Car building. Many of Garlits' famed Swamp Rat cars are on display along with memorabilia associated with Garlits and other figures in the sport. The museum also is home to the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame, which includes Art Arfons, Shirley Muldowney, Ray Godman, Sydney Allard, Raymond Beadle, Don Schumacher, Kenny Bernstein and Connie Glen Swingle. In 2019, at age 87, Garlits set a new quarter-mile record of 189.03 miles per hour with Swamp Rat 38, a 1,500-pound dragster with a batter-powered 800 horsepower elector motor.
