All seaweed is edible and the most expensive in the world is on our doorstep
Guernsey Seaweed Foraging Tours的点评
点评:We're local and decided to take a break on island and spend time finding out what the island has to offer for tourists. We heard about this tour from a friend and thought it sounded interesting. It was! We did the tour at Port Soif on a low spring tide of just 0.9 meters where we could get the freshest seaweed at low water. Our local guides were Dave, Nev and Bryan who were extremely knowledgeable, taking it in turns to talk and illustrate what they found on the day so that the tour progressed smoothly. I couldn't wait to start sampling and find out what we could eat.
My first surprise was the beautiful low water beach at Port Soif, which you could reach after walking over a length of low boulders/rocks - many locals who knew about this beach were already there. My second surprise is that, unlike mushrooms, ALL seaweed is edible, which means we could forage at any time after the tour and try anything. Third surprise is that seaweed has more vitamin C than oranges, more iron than spinach and very high in protein.
Each guide took it in turns to cut fresh samples for us. My favourite was pepper dulce a.k.a. sea truffle, "the most expensive seaweed in the world" and it's right on our shores for us to get for free whenever we want! Slightly out of season and a different colour to normal (red/brown) but the pic shows what it generally looks like. We also found out about the common gel filled bladder vraic which can be applied to skin to treat sunburn / skin issues etc, just like aloe! I had no idea. I knew I'd forget a lot of the information so bought a guide book from the products available for purchase afterwards.
Tour info suggested wearing wellies or boots you don't mind getting wet. We went on a lovely summer day and wore regular wet shoes. These were perfect
