点评:An odd little find on my trip to Belper, as I came across what is known locally as the 'Belper Disco Clock.'
In actual fact, the proper name for this garish timepiece is the somewhat less snappy "Robert Owen Public Art Clock."
So who was Robert Owen, and why does he have a bizarre, neon, almost illegible Clock installed above a Belper Co-Op in his honour?
Well, Robert Owen was a social reformer who created the modern eight hours working day model that a great many of us use today - eight hours work, eight hours recreation and eight hours rest.
This explains why the Clock is split into three distinct eight hour segments.
Robert Owen was also the founder of the co-operatove movement, which fully explains why the Clock sits above Belper's local co-op branch.
As far as I can tell, Robert Owen did not have any links to Belper - he was Welsh, and spent the entirety of his life in Wales, Manchester, London, Scotland and the USA, so the answer as to why this bizarre memorial has been installed in Belper must, I am afraid, remain a mystery.
The clock itself is, in my opinion, quite nice. From a horological point of view it is probably all hut useless, but its bright, neon colouring and weird segmentation make this quite a unique and quirky thing.
In spite of its bright, harsh colours and moderate size, this clock is still situated above the entrance to a supermarket, and so it is quite easily missed if you aren't looking for it.
