点评:There is a straight, mainly manmade, channel between the towns of Tulcea inland and Sulina on the Black Sea Coast. While this very busy waterway expedites marine traffic some local birdlife clings to the shoreline.
However within just a few hundred metres of this channel, in s six hour cruise starting from Crişan, John introduced us to a totally different natural world of many smaller lakes that join up to form the famous Delta bounded by massive reed beds, trees and shrubs. This is the home of nearly three quarters of the bird species that can be found in the whole of Europe. John is an expert on all things birds. We saw hundreds of pelicans feasting on copious numbers of fish. Similar numbers of terns nesting on lilies, lots of yellow, grey and white herons, cormorants, swans with many chicks, crested and dark grebes and many individual birds such as harriers. An incredible day to really appreciate the size and diversity of this UNESCO listed World Heritage wonder.
