点评:Snowshill Manor is introduced to visitors as the story of a lovable English eccentric.
But it is really a story of an 18th-century Caribbean slaveholding family, government reparations paid to the family for the loss of the people they enslaved, and a 20th-century heir who converted that inheritance into 20,000 objects.
Understanding Britain's wealth generated from slavery — where it came from, how the state was entrenched and then compensated people for slavery, and how quickly and quietly that money could be absorbed — matters more to the national interest than any individual hobby collection of snuff boxes or penny-farthings in a Cotwold house collection. These are a curiosity. The money that bought them is a history lesson isn't told by the National Trust in the manor it should be.
