A Guided Tour is Best but My Self Guided Tour Late in the Day Was Still Amazing

点评：There are several giant tortoise reserves on Isla Santa Cruz with most located in the Highlands region but this is the closest to the town of Puerto Ayora. I had limited time on Santa Cruz before heading off to other islands and it didn't work out with the timing to book one of their guided tours as the latest is at 2pm and I couldn't get out there until 430pm after returning from a snorkeling excursion. However, Julio César was wonderfully helpful and arranged for me to have a self guided tour of the grounds late in the afternoon and even offered to arrange for a taxi to pick me up from my hotel and return me to the town. It was about a 20 minute taxi ride from Puerto Ayora. I had easily found a taxi to get me out there but it was necessary to arrange for the taxi ride back and his assistance was very much appreciated. Although I missed out on a chance to learn a lot from a guided tour, it was still a wonderful experience wandering around the grounds as I was the only visitor there and it was just me and nature and up close encounters with the giant tortoises. I found about 20 tortoises and although they are not very active at this time of day, it was still amazing. The grounds keeper who was present pointed the direction to the short lava cave which I was also able to visit as well.
