点评:We had been looking for an ethical way to see elephants up close and this center met the criteria. This was an amazing opportunity to see elephants who spent their lives isolated and working re-learning how to be social beings with an eventual goal of re-wilding, if possible. It's done in a way that supports the needs of the elephants and respects their dignity through relationships with traditional mahouts, biologists and researchers.
The accommodations were rustic but clean and comfortable. The food was so delicious and nutritious. If you want to be less healthy, there's also a snack and adult beverage bar. The setting was absolutely gorgeous.
Be prepared to trek, possibly for an hour or two, up and downhill to meet the elephants. Our guide was knowledgeable and minded the pace of the group. We also learned about elephant veterinary care since they run the only elephant hospital in Laos.
We did the 3 day/2 night trip and felt it was worth every penny and every drop of sweat. It's a great cause and a magical experience.
My only caution is to bring some anti-nausea meds and a pillow on the drive from Luang Prabang. The road is a seriously bumpy mess.
