点评:This has been on our “must visit” list for a long time and we finally got there on a hot July afternoon. Ample parking on arrival, including dedicated Blue Badge spaces but a long walk to the house awaits after that if the infrequent buggy service is unavailable. The signage within the site and the house also left a lot to be desired and we did not find it easy getting around. Even inside the house there was no marked route through the accessible parts The grounds plan handout seemed to bear little resemblance in parts to reality and we never did find the Ice House despite searching for it on the supposed location on the plan! A simple directional sign was all that was needed for this and many other features
There seemed to be ample locations for a few blue badge parking spaces much nearer the house, judging by the number of staff and contractor vehicles, and the National Trust could do better in this respect, as we also commented on finding the same problems at Wimpole Hall. Another repeat oddity from Wimpole Hall was an excellent pianist playing loudly in one of the rooms of the house, but which was distracting when trying to concentrate on the exhibits.
Despite the issues we mention, the house and grounds are well worth visiting. It is open for far more of the year than most National Trust properties seem to be. It looks just as it was when the last owners Sir Felix (died 1982) and Lady Elizabeth Brunner (died 2003) continued to live there after handing it over to the National Trust in 1969. It still felt lived-in. Everywhere was well-maintained and there is a well-stocked gift shop. Staff were very friendly and unobtrusively helpful.
The Well House was disappointing because it was shuttered and nothing of any interest internally could be seen. All that was of use to visitors was a descriptive panel outside! There was also an archaeological dig in progress and more visible information about that and its findings would have given added interest to the visit.
