How far the Quayside has come

点评：I can remember Newcastle and Gateshead when I was a boy and how rundown it looked with the 17th century buildings on the Newcastle side being neglected, and empty buildings being a major issue. Except to see the bridges, there wasn't much else to see.
In the last 40 years, the Quayside on both sides has been transformed and is very popular with tourists. The Glasshouse and the Baltic Arts Centte dominate the Gateshead side, and on the Newcastle side there are huge variety of pubs and restaurants and restored 17th century buldings. It's possible in summer to sit outside and have a drink: the Piano and Pitcher and the Wetherspoons at the other end of the Quayside are best for this.
Note, there is a huge diversity of restaurants on the Quayside. There is Wetherspoons for those on a budget, but also American, Persian, Italian, Asian and Turkish restaurants to choose from.
Hotel chains such as Leonardos, Travelodge and Premier Inn all have hotels on the Quayside now, which means if you fancy a stay in a hotel overlooking the Tyne, you have a coniderable choice.
Other things to be aware of is a large part of the Quayside is pedestrianised and the Millenium Bridge is for cyclists and pedestrians only, making walking easier. Another thing to be aware of is the walk from the Quayside to the city centre involves a steep bank, so it might be better for people with mobility problems to use the bus.
On the whole, though, Newcastle Gateshead Quayside is as good to visit as other areas in Newcastle.
