点评:We had based part of our holiday in Crossgar and had already visited many Game of Thrones locations around Northern Ireland. In fact, filming had only recently finished on the Ballynahinch Road. We had been lucky enough to drive along that beautiful road on 12th August, during the partial solar eclipse, and the strange light made the already breathtaking scenery feel particularly eerie and very Game of Thrones!
On our way back to Ballydavis (Rep. Ireland) and our last day in the area, we decided to visit the Game of Thrones Studio Tour at Banbridge.
First, a big thank you to the staff. Being boomers, we somehow managed to mix up the date when buying our tickets! Although the conditions state that amendments normally incur a charge, they very kindly changed ours without charging us.
We parked at The Boulevard shopping centre in Banbridge and caught the shuttle bus to the studios. We had booked the last tour of the day at 15.40h, but this is the one thing I would NOT recommend. The return bus was at 18.00h and two hours simply wasn't enough. There is so much to see that I would definitely book an earlier visit next time.
The lovely lady at the bus pick-up point explained everything and helped us sort out the audio commentary. A tip for visitors with foreign phones: our Spanish phones didn't always have good coverage, so using the headphones and selecting the commentary manually worked much better for us.
The Studio Tour itself is STUNNING. If you are a Game of Thrones fan, it really is a must. Seeing the sets, costumes, props and incredible detail involved makes you appreciate the phenomenal amount of creativity and work that went into producing the series.
We also loved talking to members of staff who had their own memories of the filming. They told us about the actors living around Belfast for long periods and becoming familiar faces to local people, which added a lovely personal dimension to the experience.
And another enormous thank you to the staff: my husband managed to leave his phone in the toilets! The staff worked out that it belonged to Peter and, with my face appearing on his screen, actually searched for us inside the exhibition to return it. Amazing service and we were extremely grateful!
We bought two souvenir photographs for £30. In hindsight, we should have taken the £40 package as you get much more for the extra £10.
At 18.00h we reluctantly caught the bus back, tired but very happy, collected our car and headed towards Ballydavis in the evening light.
A fantastic experience and one of the highlights of our Game of Thrones travels in Northern Ireland. Just one piece of advice: GO EARLY — you will want much more than two hours!
