Beautiful but very commercial place
Okonjima Game Reserve的点评
点评：We stayed at the Okonjima campsite and had been really looking forward to seeing leopards and contributing to what was presented as a charity focused on the well-being of leopards. Unfortunately, this place did not at all meet our expectations and we want to share our honest opinion to allow others to base their decision on accurate information.
First of all, the good things: the Okonjima Nature Reserve is absolutely stunning and the campsite was very nice and convenient. We were welcomed warmly and sat down with the staff upon arrival to discuss and book activities. We booked the game drive (rather than the much more expensive leopard tracking) and agreed to decide on the next morning's activity depending on what animals we encountered during the game drive. The staff mentioned that the game drive is focused on wildlife in general rather than on a particular animal, but that it is of course possible to encounter a leopard.
The game drive really did not live up to expectations. Our guide John M was very passionate and knowledgeable, but drifted away due to the flood of questions raised by one of the other couples in the car. It was really the slowest safari we have ever done and it took almost 1h45mins to even get out of the gates of the campsite area. After that, we made only about four (very lengthy) stops inter alia to discuss trees, and stayed at the (pre-identified location of the) rhinos for almost 45mins (whereas other safari cars left in 10mins). We only saw an extremely small part of the reserve and had no time left to explore further. We feel that it is up to the guide to strike the right balance between preferences amongst participants, and we personally felt completely overlooked.
We have the impression that this was all done on purpose: we were in a group of people that hadn't decided yet on whether to do the leopard tracking tour the next morning, and the game drive's purpose appears to have been exactly to push us to do so. When discussing the next morning's activity with the guide at the end of our game drive, we and another couple asked whether another game drive would give us the chance to spot a leopard. The guide advised against that and mentioned that the guides for regular game drives are explicitly told to "hold off" if the leopard tracking guide finds a leopard. We were utterly shocked! This is not at all how Okonjima itself and the game drive are advertised. Everything seems aimed at having you book that one extra (and preferably more expensive) activity. When raising our concerns with the personnel, they initially questioned whether we had understood this correctly. Ultimately, however, they gave us a 20% discount on the game drive. We appreciated this gesture and the time the personnel took to hear us out.
The commercialism we experienced led us to question the motives of this purported non-profit organization. Following some other reviews we read through, we did some investigation ourselves and discovered that Okonjima is not as charitable as it presents itself given the intertwinement between the foundation and the founding family's business (which owns the real estate and, through a trust, the land).
Let us be clear: the Okonjima Nature Reserve is a beautiful and very luxurious safari place, and this of course comes with a price. For us, that price is not the issue, but rather it just felt wrong to book additional activities as we felt deceived. It is of course up to everyone themselves to decide what to book and how much spend, but please make this decision well-informed and do not assume that your money just goes straight to charity.
