We took part in the Leopard Tracking twice, once in the afternoon and once early in the morning, and we were incredibly lucky: we spotted seven leopards, including Vamos, Khaleesi, Mawenzi and one of Vamos’s cubs, as well as others whose names I unfortunately cannot remember.
Seeing so many leopards and observing them in the bush was truly exciting.
One thing made me curious: the leopards are still located using radio signals from their collars, which the guide tracks with an antenna. I asked why they don’t use GPS and was told that it would be more expensive and that the battery would not last as long. I have to admit that, considering the technology available today, the answer left me a little puzzled.
The price of the activities is definitely excessive. During our trip we did numerous game drives at other properties, including 5-star lodges, and paid considerably less.
Another aspect Okonjima could improve is the management of guests during the activities. On one of our drives, we shared the vehicle with a family who talked loudly practically the entire time. At one point, the mother and daughters even started singing children’s songs. Despite a couple of rather obvious looks from us, they continued throughout the excursion.
This prevented me from fully enjoying a fundamental part of the experience: the silence of the bush, the sounds of nature, the anticipation and the excitement of the search. Considering the cost of the activity, I think the guides should remind guests of a few basic rules of behaviour and, when necessary, politely intervene.
Our room was very pretty, comfortable and clean, with air conditioning and a large, spacious bathroom.
Unfortunately, I also found a spider in the room. The accommodation is surrounded by bush, so I completely understand that this can happen. I called a member of staff to remove it and, when I asked whether it was dangerous, the answer was simply: “Yes.” 😱 Not exactly what I wanted to hear before going to sleep!
Unfortunately, dinner was spoiled by huge grasshoppers jumping onto the tables. They are probably the insects I dislike the most.
I completely understand that we are in Africa and in the heart of the bush, but precisely for this reason I wonder why the dining room doors are not kept closed in the evening, at least to reduce the number of insects getting inside. Being surrounded by nature is wonderful; having dinner with huge grasshoppers jumping onto the tables, considerably less so.
