A church designed by Otto Wagner in Secessionsstil!
设计史丹夫教堂的点评
点评：As we had heard so much about this church, designed by the famous Otto Wagner, we decided to visit it! It is in the Pentzing district of Vienna, in the Otto Wagner Areal, a former psychiatric hospital, so we had to take bus 48A to get there.
We have to admit we had mixed feelings about both the church and the hospital, but the visit was very eye-opening and worth every moment.
To reach the church located at the highest point of the hospital, we had to pass a huge number of buildings for the psychiatric patients. The sheer number of those buildings was a stark reminder that there was a large number of wealthy people at that time who needed psychiatric treatment!
The church is a Roman Catholic church and is a prominent example of the Secessionsstil, the Jugendstil of Vienna! It is consecrated to Saint Leopold, the patron saint of Austria and Vienna.
Although very interesting, for us this church was a very unusual building, disturbing for moments. As we did not fully understand some symbols, we could not escape the recurring question: why?
From the brochure, we learned that some architectural elements were chosen because it was a church for mentally ill patients. For example, the altar and the priest area are completely separated from the patients; there were hidden doorways for the medical staff to quickly leave in case of need, etc...
The church was extensively renovated between 2000 and 2006!
