点评：Árbær Open Air Museum is a fascinating collection of historic Icelandic houses and buildings, with interiors furnished to show how people lived and worked in earlier times.
For us, having a guide made a huge difference. She provided a timeline for the different buildings and, more importantly, explained who lived in them, what they did and how everyday life changed over the years. Without that context I think much of the significance could easily be missed.
There were also some wonderful living-history touches. We watched a blacksmith making chisels using traditional methods, and inside the old Lutheran church there was a working harmonium which one of our tour members was actually able to play.
The turf-roofed buildings, old household interiors, workshops and church all made this a very enjoyable and surprisingly immersive visit.
I would definitely recommend either joining a guided tour or using an audio guide if available. Knowing the stories behind the buildings transforms this from simply walking around a collection of old houses into a much more interesting insight into Iceland’s social history and everyday life.
