点评:This is one of those reviews I don’t know how to write. Yes, I recommend you go and see the camp with a good guide. However, you know this will not be a pleasant visit. It sits as monument to man’s inhumanity. Built in 1933 as the Nazis first camp it would serve as the model for all those to come. It would also house the school of violence to train the SS. It was not built primarily for Jews (though many would die there); it was to house political enemies of the Third Reich along with those who would “benefit” from “protective custody.” Over 48000 would die there. Not just in the gas chamber (which you can tour), but many would be shot on the officer’s pistol range and others would die from disease due to the horrid conditions, overcrowding, lack of sanitation, and food. Built to house 6000, when the Allies liberated Dachau in 1945 there were more than 60000 inmates. Somehow, seeing the monuments, the barracks, the gas chamber, and the crematoriums; I could almost feel the sadness and pain of all the poor souls held there. No it’s not pleasant, but IMO it’s a must visit.
