点评:The Basilica Palladiana is a renowned Renaissance public building located in Piazza dei Signori in Vicenza.
It is considered the city's symbol and an architectural masterpiece.
It is not a church: The name "basilica" has no religious meaning; instead, it derives from the Ancient Roman term for large public buildings used for business and the administration of justice.
The building incorporates the pre-existing Gothic-style Palazzo della Ragione, which dates back to the 15th century.
In 1546, the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio was commissioned to redesign the exterior loggias following partial collapses and stability issues.
Palladio encased the medieval palace in a double tier of white marble loggias featuring the *Serliana Window* motif (an arched opening flanked by two rectangular openings topped with lintels).
The Loggias represent one of the earliest and most mature expressions of Palladio's classical style, skillfully correcting the asymmetries of the pre-existing Gothic structure.
The roof features the distinctive shape of a large, inverted ship's hull and is clad in copper.
Completed in 1614, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.
Renowned for its loggia featuring Serliana windows, an innovative architectural solution that became a hallmark of the Palladian style, the building has once again become accessible to the public following an extensive restoration project.
Once past the entrance, the monumental exterior gives way to striking interiors.
The first floor houses a vast hall—now used for exhibitions in Vicenza—while the second floor features the “Domus Comestabilis” hall, which opens onto a spacious terrace offering a spectacular panoramic view of the Vicenza hills.
We were lucky to visit this magical site, and one of the finest examples of the Italian Renaissance.
