点评:The 19th century Palais du Pharo is a large imperial palace that sits on one of the headlands overlooking the Marseille harbour. Built originally by Emperor Napoleon III for his Spanish wife, the fashionable Empress Eugénie.
Unfortunately, you can’t go inside any more but the surrounding grounds are still open to the public and entry to the gardens is free. If you only have one day in Marseille, it’s better to spend your time visiting Fort Saint-Jean on the opposite headland.
We had an extra day so we spent a couple of hours one morning walking up the hill to the Palais. It was a good 30 minute walk which was made more interesting by stopping at the Four Navettes bakery and the Abbey of St Victor on the way.
Once we reached the Palais, we strolled across the lawns, admired the grand palace from the outside and checked out the Heros de la Mer monument. However the main attraction is the absolutely panoramic view down over the harbour, out to sea and across to Fort Saint Jean. The view was well worth the climb.
