点评:Bottom line: If you're driving past Masada on your way to Eilat or, in the opposite direction, Jerusalem, by all means stop off at the Visiors' Center. Do not waste your time or money going to the top of the mountain, especially if you're only in Israel for a short trip.
Because there were so few people on Sept 25 (the crowds will arrive during the Sukkot holiday), all the ticket offices were closed. After wandering around a bit we discovered that we could buy tickets at the National Parks store. An extremely unpleasant and rude woman named Hili Markowitz asked me three times if I wanted to pay for the children. Each time I said yes. When she charged us only for me and my wife, and I told her I also wanted to include the children, she got very made at me and demanded to know why I hadn't told her in advance that I wanted to pay for the children as well. This was not an auspicious start to the day.
To take her revenge on me for daring to tell her that she was wrong, she demanded a WhatsApp photograph of the children's parents' picture I.D., even though I had already told it to her, in order to prove that we were Matmid members. When she saw the picture, she simply typed the I.D. number into her computer. This was not a nice, friendly, or humane woman.
There was another problem when she charged us to renew our Matmid subscription without bothering to inform us that there was also a longer, two-year option.
To avoid the heat, we had planned to take the cable car to the top, see Masad, come back down, eat in one of the restaurants, and then see the short movie and visit what turned out to be a fantastic museum. This did not work out.
The signage at the top is absolutely terrible. There are no signs pointing towards the main attractions or to the Roman path going down to the Arad signs. There is water of any sort withing the park, except at the entrance. The signs to the toilets pointed in directions where we could not see any toilets.
The tickets did not come with a site map. We saw a few old signs regarding audio guides, but saw no audio guides anywhere, including the shop where we bought the tickets.
The Northern Palace involves a lot of steps which simply aren't worth the effort. The few wall paintings that are there are reproductions, the originals being back down the mountain in the museum. Most of the pottery and other findings are at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
When we got back down, we tried to enter the main cafeteria buffet, but the door from the staircase was locked. When we walked back up to the main floor and tried using the elevator, the button clearly marked "restaurant" took us to a blocked corridor. An elevator directly to the restaurant floor was blocked off with a table.
When we went back to the National Parks office and asked, they finally told us that the restaurants have been closed for year. There are almost no signs inside the visitors' center, and the one that proudly pointed to a coffee bar has been wrong for at least three years.
Therefore, we gave the kids some snacks and took them into the short movie. Almost everyone had to stand, as the theater only had two chairs. At seven minutes, the movie was too short to give a serious explanation of Masada's history. After that we spent almost half an hour in the museum, which was worth much more time, but the kids were really hungry so we left and drove to Ein Boqeq where we went to a much more expensive restaurant to eat.
The nasty woman, the lack of water, the lack of a map, the missing signage, the fact that there was nothing to eat, the chair less theater, and the non-existing audio guides really put a damper on what should have been an amazing experience for our three grandchildren.
