点评:We wanted to do the bridge and also the walkways and we weren’t entirely sure what to expect as the official website is light on details. After trawling the web and consulting Copilot we pretty much worked it out but still weren’t sure how hard it would be to do the walkways in the June heat (over 30 degrees the day we went). However, it was fine - although we only went downhill! I would caution against going up all the steps if you’re not in good shape. It was beautiful and a really nice way to spend the day. We aren’t particularly fit so just did a short section of the walkways. Our bridge ticket was at 10am and we’d crossed and reached the Vau river beach by 12pm.
Here’s my top tips as the info out there is difficult to find.
Start from the Alvarenga side of the bridge if you don’t want to walk up 600 steps from Areinho. There’s ample parking at Alvarenga and the walk to the bridge took us about 20 mins at a leisurely pace. But it’s uneven surfaces all the way to the bridge so wear trainers.
Tickets for the bridge must be bought online, you can’t buy at the bridge. The ticket for the bridge covers you for the walkways so you don’t need tix for both (the website wasn’t very clear on this so we bought both needlessly). You can also return over the bridge on the same ticket - you just have to align with the next available crossing.
The walkways are easy terrain but there are lots of steps so comfy shoes are advised there too. There are some shaded parts but mostly in full sun so hat and water also a must, and there are no loos till Vau so be warned! There’s no snack concessions etc so if you’re likely to get hungry, take food.
If you want a fairly short walk, you can stop at Vau, have a swim or paddle if you fancy it, use the toilets there (which are pretty clean for outdoor facilities) and catch a taxi or jeep back to Alvarenga. It’s about €20-30 per car so if you make friends en route you can share a 6 or 7 seater for about €5 per person.
