点评：From the outside, St. John’s Co-Cathedral is surprisingly understated — especially considering how famous it is.
The building sits solidly within Valletta’s streets, with a plain, almost fortress-like façade made from the same golden limestone as the rest of the city. If you didn’t know what it was, it would be easy to walk past without realising how significant it is.
That simplicity is what makes it interesting. Valletta is full of detailed balconies and decorative buildings, but the cathedral exterior feels deliberately restrained, with straight lines, heavy doors, and minimal ornamentation. It reflects the influence of the Knights of St John, who built it — practical, defensive, and focused more on strength than display.
It’s worth stopping outside even if you don’t go in, just to take in the contrast between expectation and reality. One of Malta’s most important buildings looks almost quiet from the street, which makes it stand out in a different way.
