Enjoyed rambling around this Old Castle
Antimachia Castle的点评
点评：Saturday 11th July we visited the vast remains of this medieval fortress.
It is located on a hilltop approximately 166 metres (545 feet) above sea level and almost equidistant from Antimachia and Kardamena. There is a walking trail from Kardamena 3.3 kilometres and takes about an hour.
We drove here from Antimachia and at some point the road turned into an unsurfaced track. We parked up in front of the Castle, there was plenty of space there.
The Castle was built between 1322 and 1346 by the Knights Hospitaller. We also learnt that the Castle covers an area in excess of 26,000 square metres. The wall of the Castle is 970 metres (3,182 feet) long.
We did enjoy climbing up and walking around the remains of the battlements and ramparts, in places it was a bit hair raising as there was no wall and definitely no handrails.
A series of rustic pathways criss-cross the interior of the Castle from side to side. There are some wonderful views across the Kardamena plain, the sea channel between Kos and the island of Nisyros and surrounding area.
Within the walls of the Castle there are a number of ruins to visit as well as two small Churches, Saint Nicholas Holy Orthodox Chapel Agia Paraskevi, both reviewed separately.
It is free to enter the Castle, however, donations are invited and can be left in office beside the large entrance gate.
It was rather obvious at some stage a lot of money was spent on improvements here. This included cafe, possibly a visitors centre and toilets, all are now boarded up and rotting away. The lights that were installed to illuminate the pathways were broken and not worked for a very long time. It is such a shame that all the money was spent only to go to ruin.
