Fabulous day at Cliveden

An absolutely stunning building, parkland and woodland. The woodland borders the river Thames and there is boat hire and refreshments there. The water gardens are beautifully planned with stepping stone bridges and fountains making rainbows in the sunshine. We just went ‘wow’ when walking onto the vast terrace of the house overlooking the parterre of carefully clipped Yew, all of it on an oversized scale with views as far as the eye could see. Another wow factor is the view walking up the driveway to the house. As the house is now a luxury hotel, there are only a few guided house tours on certain days which visit just three downstairs areas. The plasterwork, oak panelling and carving and the gold leaf are impressive but don’t be too upset if you don’t manage to get on a tour as you see very little of the inside and certainly don’t get any feeling of the earlier residents living there. The hour and a half history tour which doesn’t go inside might be better but on our visit clashed with the house tour. The infamous swimming pool connected to the Profumo affair is hidden away within the private spa area. There is a beautiful separate conservatory, also huge, which now houses the cafe and there are many other refreshment outlets around the estate. We take our own, but were tempted by freshly made pizza by the river which wasn’t too overpriced. They warn you about the red kites and sure enough, half a slice was swiped from my hand without me seeing it coming. Shocking whilst also a bit thrilling!
The National Trust staff were very good and informative about the history and took time to chat. We were there from 9.30 until 4.30 and barely stopped moving the whole day.
I thoroughly recommend a visit.

国家信托基金的工作人员非常热心，详细介绍了这里的历史，还乐意与我们闲聊。我们从早上9点半一直待到下午4点半，一整天几乎没停歇过。
