DISSAPOINTING VISIT TO UPTON HOUSE
Upton House & Gardens的点评
点评：Sunday 27th September 2026, we picked up our friend Stephanie at 11.00 am and we drove up to Edge Hill to go to visit Upton House and Gardens under the care of The National Trust.
Upton House was the country home of Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted, and his family. Walter brought the estate in 1927. Walter extensively remodelled the house to provide space for his growing art collection while at the same time installing all the necessary guest rooms and entertainments expected of a wealthy host, including a billiard room, squash court and swimming pool.
Walter’s father, Marcus Samuel, had accumulated his fortune through the family business, the Shell Transport and Trading Company, today known as Royal Dutch Shell. Walter was also one of the 20th century’s great philanthropists, giving regular donations to the many charities he supported.
Lady Bearsted employed Kitty Lloyd to re-design the gardens; they became great lifelong friends, as they worked together to create the fashionable Bog Garden, rock garden and herbaceous borders around the Kitchen Garden.
Sadly today not all the rooms were open. Stephanie, my husband and I wandered round this lovely house looking at the five rooms open to the public. We took in the furniture, wonderful pottery and artwork, which was interesting. We took quite a few nice photographs.
Afterwards, we were then in need of refreshments so we went to ‘The Orangery’ for drinks and cakes. Stephanie had a nice latte coffee and a large slice of apple crumble cake. My husband had a pot of tea and I had a decaffeinated latte coffee and we both indulged in large slices of apple crumble cake and clotted cream. We spent a nice hour here relaxing.
We then took a short stroll round the terraced gardens. Sadly parts of the garden were closed off due to repairs and lawn damage done back in the summer. We left ‘Upton House’ at closing time.

遗憾的是，如今并非所有房间都对游客开放。我和丈夫斯蒂芬妮漫步在这座美丽的宅邸中，参观了五间对公众开放的房间。我们仔细欣赏了那里的家具、精美的陶器以及艺术品。挺有意思的。我们拍了不少不错的照片。
之后我们觉得需要补充点能量，于是去“橘园”享用饮料和蛋糕。斯蒂芬妮点了一杯美味的拿铁咖啡和一大块苹果脆皮蛋糕。我丈夫喝了一壶茶，我则点了一杯无咖啡因的拿铁咖啡；我们俩都尽情享用了大块的苹果脆皮蛋糕和凝脂奶油。我们在那里惬意地放松了一个小时。
随后，我们在梯田式花园里散了一小会儿步。遗憾的是，由于夏季时的维修工作以及草坪受损，花园的部分地区暂时封闭了。我们在闭园时离开了“厄普顿庄园”。
