点评:Walking from the railway station of Sedan to the famous castle, we came upon Saint Charles Borromeo Church at Place d’Armes. The church has an interesting history, which is reflected in its architecture. It was built between 1593 and 1601 as a Protestant temple at the time when Sedan was an independent principality. But Protestants soon lost the right to practice their religion when the principality was annexed to the Kingdom of France and their temple was transformed into a Catholic church in 1688. The nave and the aisles were preserved, but the typical Protestant galleries above the aisles were removed. A rotunda covered by a dome was added to serve as a choir, as well as a new façade with two towers (1726 and 1823) and a smaller middle tower with a clock (1837). Inside we saw some fine woodwork and a beautiful organ, but, on the whole, we thought this rather austere church was not a must-see. From the castle we later had a good view of the whole building.
