点评:Angus may be short on quantity when it comes to National Trust for Scotland visitor attractions, but certainly not on quality.
Of the three, the House of Dun is the grandest; a fine mansion and grounds in a beautiful rural setting on the road between Brechin and Montrose. Designed by William Adam in the Palladian style, its formal symmetry is in contrast to the many castles in the area: handsome but not overwhelming, with fine views to the Montrose Basin.
It’s been a while since I was last inside, and there have been big changes in presentation: there’s now a costumed guide to lead you round and bring the house to life with history and observations.
Ours was absolutely brilliant, assuming the role of the estate manager, William Young: enthusiastic, engaging and extremely entertaining. It’s not a huge house, so the tours are leisurely without being overlong: they cover both the ‘upstairs’ and ‘downstairs’ life, contrasting the lives of the owners and their servants. Unusually, the taking of pictures is encouraged, so you can create your own memories rather than having to buy a handbook!
The courtyard outhouses now display a selection of items from the Angus Folk Museum collection (formerly at Glamis) and the walled garden is well worth looking out. There’s a really nice café attached, too.
Just a word about accessibility. There are quite a few stairs, which some may find difficult. One of our friendship group felt unable to cope, and stayed downstairs: we’d like to thank Karen (hope I remembered that correctly) from the welcome team, who came across to look after her and her husband who elected to stay with her and provided them with a private mini tour while the rest of us continued upstairs.
Very highly recommended for a half day if you're doing the house and its immediate surroundings, or longer, if you want to explore the extensive grounds.
