Two Sides of the Story: An Engaging Visit to Strokestown House and Famine Museum
Strokestown Park & National Famine Museum的点评
点评：I had long hoped to visit here after hearing the amazing Jim Callery interviewed about Strokestown House and the Famine Walk on the radio. Well, the opportunity arose as I travelled back from Westport and I am so glad it did!
We took the guided tour of the House with the delightful Ella at the helm. She was full of information and a most engaging guide. The House itself is so worth seeing as it is, frozen in time from the mid 20th century. Unlike other Big House visits that rely on the story of wealth and privilege from an earlier period, this allows us a window to see the decline of status and finance for the Anglo-Irish in independent Ireland. The family photos and personal objects strewn about help humanise the generations of the Mahon family who lived at Strokestown House and felt deeply rooted to the area.
If the visit to the House left me soft and fuzzy on the landed gentry, the visit to the Famine Museum next door tilted my emotional axis again. This immersive and well curated exhibition tells the reality of life of the ordinary Irish tenants on the Strokestown Estate who funded the engine of wealth of the Big House. The story of the funded emigration and arduous journey of tenants turned off the estate during the Great Famine is chilling. Again, looking at the Famine through the focused lens of a single townland with the names of the impoverished people restored to them, makes the tragedy personal. The design of the display of the ‘Petition’ needs to be particularly complimented. Totally immersive, this clever audio and visual display gets over the usual difficulties associated with exhibiting an old handwritten document.
I also ate at the Cafe there. The food was excellent (a really proper sausage roll) and the coffee was good. It’s a lovely area to take a break or meet someone, even if you haven’t time to visit the House and the Museum.
The only negative was the signage in the town for the Museum and House was inadequate. I wasn’t sure when I drove in the gate that I was supposed to enter there or that I was in the right place. I could have missed the signage, but I was looking! It would be a pity for anyone to miss out on visiting such a lovely place!

如果说参观这座庄园让我对地主阶层产生了些许好感与怜惜之情的话……这次参观隔壁的饥荒博物馆再次动摇了我的情感平衡。这个沉浸式的、策划精良的展览，讲述了斯特罗克斯特德庄园里普通佃农的真实生活状况——正是他们为庄园主积累了财富。大饥荒期间，这些佃农被迫离开庄园、远渡重洋的悲惨经历令人不寒而栗。又一次。通过聚焦于某一个村庄的视角来审视大饥荒，并还原那些贫苦民众的名字，让这场悲剧变得触手可及、令人感同身受。“请愿书”展品的设计也值得特别称赞：这一巧妙的音视频展示形式极具沉浸感，成功克服了在展览古老手写文献时常遇到的种种难题。
我也在那里的咖啡馆用餐。食物非常美味（那个香肠卷简直绝了），咖啡也很不错。这是一个非常适合休息或与人见面的好地方，即便你没有时间参观这座宅邸和博物馆。
唯一不足之处就是镇上关于博物馆和宅邸的指示牌不够多。当我开车进入大门时，我甚至不确定自己是否该从那里进入，或者是否到了正确的地点。也许是我没注意到指示牌，但我确实在仔细寻找啊！要是有人因此错过了参观这个如此美丽的地方，那就太可惜了！
