点评:Madrid is home to three great art museums that are within walking distance of each other along El Retiro Park: The Prado and the Reina Sofia are the better known, but for many, including us, this may be the favorite.
Why? This would be a great art museum in any city in the world. The Thyssen-Bornemisza was donated by a private collector and features a huge art collection. There are excellent works from every period from approximately 1600 up to the present, with particular attention on European and American artists.
Approximately 1,000 works are on display.
The range and list of artists rivals just about every museum in the world including, surprisingly, many American artists. The list includes: Rembrandt, Jan Van Eyck, Hans Holbein, Eugene Delacroix, Bellini, Manet, Degas, Pissarro, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Fernand Leger, Gino Severini, Piet Mondrian, Henri Matisse, Edward Hopper, Paul Guigan, James Ensor, Wassily Kandinsky, Willem de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein, Alberto Giacometti, Marc Chagall, Klee, Egon Schiele, Pierre Bonnard, Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, George Innnes, Frederic Edwin Church, John Singer Sargent, James Whistler, George Bellows, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Ernst Kirchner, and William Merritt Chase among them.
While our interest is primarily in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist work, there are many delights from other periods. One favorite was "The Love Letter" by Claude Clouet. Try reading the faces of the three characters in the painting to determine what is going on.
They have several works from the Russian Avant-Garde movement, which was highly influential from around 1910 to 1930. Works from this period outside Russia are rare and worth seeking out. The names are less familiar in the west, but many of the works are striking, such as those by Natasha Goncharova, Nikolai Suetin and Liya Chashnik.
While there is great art, one feature of this museum is that it has a lot of the artists’ earlier (and sometimes later) works, so you get a sense of how they developed their unique styles. There are many examples, but my favorite was a work by Edvard Munch (of "The Scream" fame) entitled "Geese in an Orchard," which is very different from what one would expect from this artist's later works.
One thing to note is that they appear to have merged separate collections so you’ll see many artists with works in different places. There are also some landscapes where the same scene is depicted by different artists. It pays to explore the different galleries to find works that interest you.
We loved the Prado, but we enjoyed this museum the most. While we would recommend taking a break, you can see both in the same day.
