点评：If you only visit one church in San Gimignano, make it this one. The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta may look simple from the outside, but inside it holds one of Italy’s greatest artistic treasures. The History: Built originally in the 11th century and consecrated in 1148, this Romanesque church was expanded in the 13th and 14th centuries. While the exterior is stone-faced and humble, the interior was designed to show off the wealth and power of the medieval town.
What to see: Once you step inside, the entire nave is covered in spectacular, vivid frescoes. The Old Testament scenes by Bartolo di Fredi and the New Testament cycle by Lippo Memmi (a pupil of Simone Martini) are absolutely magnificent—often called the "Sistine Chapel of Tuscany." Don't miss the incredible Last Judgment covering the entire entrance wall.
