点评:There are things Australians grow up knowing without ever really questioning them.
The dog on the Tucker Box is one of those things.
Somewhere along the way we all learned that there was a dog, sitting on a tuckerbox, five miles from Gundagai. Nobody seemed particularly concerned about why the dog was sitting on the food.
For my non-Australian friends, tucker is food and a tuckerbox was what you carried it in. So yes, one of our national roadside icons is essentially a dog sitting on somebody’s lunch.
The monument has been here since 1932 and people are still pulling off the road to see him. These days the old highway route has changed, but the dog is still doing a pretty decent trade in passing humans.
And of course I arrived while parts of the site were fenced off and being worked on. Because apparently scaffolding now follows me around Australia.
Still, I stopped. You have to.
Australians: did your family stop at the Dog on the Tuckerbox? And everyone else: had you ever heard the word “tuckerbox” ?
