点评:No visit to Salzburg is complete without stopping by Mirabell Palace and Mirabell Gardens. Built in the 1600s, it is an important historical and cultural heritage monument of the city, and is therefore no surprise that the palace with its garden is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of Salzburg's Baroque-influenced Historic Centre. More than that, most baby-boomers would also appreciate the Mirabell Gardens as one of the principal settings for 'The Sound of Music' movie, filmed here in 1965. We visited during the winter months, so were treated to a snow-blanketed garden, frozen fountain and no blooming flowers. But this certainly did not dampen our spirit as we put on our most creative touches to mimic Maria in singing Do-Re-Mi and dancing around the Pegasus Fountain and skipping through the Hedge Tunnel. It's heartening to see much of the place remains the same although 6 decades have passed since the filming of this classic. Also worth taking note is the statues of 28 Greek and Roman gods and heroes erected here, from the entrance and continuing all the way into the palace - a clear symbol of power that the rulers of that time wanted Mirabell to depict.
