点评:There are no fewer than 55 indoor and outdoor activities available for guests at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. From golf to tennis to fishing to swimming to bowling to horseback riding to biking to falconry to ice skating to Alpine climbing to croquet. But nothing beats the Bunker Tour, America's most closely guarded secret during the Cold War. Conceived by President Dwight D. Eisenhower and built 720 feet into the hillside underneath the Greenbrier's main building, construction of the top-secret, super-sized, concrete-encased 12,544-square-foot nuclear fallout shelter, designed to house all 535 members of the United State House of Representatives and Senate, was begun in 1958 and completed in 1961. Step through a 25-ton blast door to learn its secrets and how it was kept hidden for more than 30 years. The vast underground relocation center for the U.S. Congress was in readiness from 1962 to 1992, complete with four entrances, House and Senate chambers, decontamination area, 18 dormitories designed to accommodate more than 1,100 people, power plant with purification equipment and three 25,000-gallon water tanks, three 14,000-gallon diesel fuel tanks, medical clinic with 12 hospital beds, medical and dental operating rooms, cafeteria, communications area with a television production area and audio recording booths, laboratory, pharmacy and intensive care unit and meeting rooms for the House and Senate. On May 31, 1992, the Washington Post exposed the facility. In 1995, the U.S. government ended the lease agreement with the Greenbrier and the resort began offering tours of the bunker. But reserve a space as soon as you can. The 90-minute guided tour is open only to Greenbrier patrons, is limited to a maximum of 25 people per tour, doesn't allow kids under 10 and usually sells out fast. Tickets are $52 for adults and $24 for youth 10-17.
