点评:One of the greatest experiences for a tourist is to visit Venice, and the heart of the experience is to visit the main city square.
It was my second visit and I really recommend to start from the canal riding the vaporetto.
As soon as you put your feet on land, you find two columns, the column of San Marco the patron saint of the city represented by the winged lion on top on the right and the column of San Todaro the older city patron on the left, both erected around the end of the 12th century. Then you are in the smaller plaza San Marco between the gothic Doges' palace to the right and the Zecca (mint) palace from the 16th century on the left, now the National Marcian Library. Now you reach the almost rectangular San Marco Square with the four sides are respectively the famous 11th century Cathedral of San Marco, the 15th century clocktower and the 16th century old Procuratie palace (the longest building in Venice, the Correr museum from the time of Napoleon, and finally the New Procuratie palace always from the Napoleonic era and now serving as the National Archeological museum. The San Marco Bell Tower built in 1912 just 10 years after the original 10th century tower collapsed and the 16th century Sansovino loge beneath it are situated at the entrance of the square, right in front of the Doge's palace gate.
The square offer many cafes, restaurants and all sorts of shops, but don't expect the prices to be moderate.
No one visits Venice without spending an hour or so enjoying the stroll, or having a cafe or just feeding the pigeons, but if you are interested and have the time as well as some extra money, I recommend spending a full day (or maybe even two days) starting from early morning to visit all available attractions.
