点评:Going to Tivoli was easier than I expected and the ride on the clean and modern train was a pleasure if not because of the delay caused by the national train strike which appears to occur every other week.
The ride was about 45 minutes but that’s due to the local nature of the train which made multiple stops along the way. Please note that the majority of the trains leave from and return to the Roma Tiburtina Station which is not far from the Roma Termini although I selected a train that left from and returned to the Roma Termini.
There was an easy slightly uphill 20 minute walk through central Tivoli to get to the Villa. Admission was €15 per person. The actual villa is only modestly restored with some beautiful painted ceilings but really not much else to see inside the vast building. The Star of the visit was the garden and multiple fountains.
I went during the late winter slow season and really enjoyed the relative lack of tourists. Flowers were not blooming and many of the plants were still dormant. Nevertheless, all the fountains were running and they were spectacular. This had to be an unbelievable place 400 years ago during spring and summer. The vast tiered garden is terraced so some hill climbing is required and there is no handicap ramps so wheelchair access is limited. There is a coffee shop at the main terrace and toilets are available and clean at least during the slow season.
By the way, try not to visit Hadrian’s Villa during the same day unless you are driving as they are far apart and both require substantial walking. I do see a fairly large parking structure in the proximity of the town center although I am certain it would be full all the time during the summer. Take the train.
