点评:£150 for four of us to visit castle and gardens plus an extra charge each way for the boat! A fair old trek up to the castle but views were good. Some of the pathway seemed a bit precarious but we took our time and got there without falling! Guides inside were mixed. One or two were eager to give info. However in the chapel I had to wait for the guide to stop texting before I could ask a question. I would have preferred more written information relating to the exhibits.
The day we visited was quite windy so I ended up wearing half my cup of coffee. The cafe itself was ok but the staff seemed to be working very hard to achieve not a lot! (I know prepping barista style coffee takes time but there was a long queue and customers were getting in each others’ way.
The gardens were disappointing. We gave up after climbing a bit. I’ve got to say a couple of things influenced our day (not controllable by the staff.) The wind made the climb in the gardens a challenge and the recent drought made the grass a dustbowl. Normally we would have sat on the grass and had some refreshment but this was not possible. Highlight of the day for me was the boat trip back. Terrified the life out of my wife but I enjoyed the bouncy conditions!
Overall, a lot of money paid out. Maybe on a better day we would have enjoyed it more. I know as NT members we could have saved but coming from Scotland I don’t know if Historic Scotland have a reciprocal arrangement?
