点评:A unique natural wonder, but please be aware of active rockfall risks!
I visited the Clay Cliffs alone during a very quiet time of day, which was a beautiful experience, but it highlighted a significant safety hazard that all visitors should know about.
While I was up inside the revean at the cliffs, a small earthquake struck. I didn’t feel the shaking because I was moving, but I heard the rumble and checked later on line, I immediately saw shingle and chunks of clay breaking off the top parts of the cliffs around me. While the falling debris wasn't large enough to be fatal, it absolutely could have caused serious injuries.
I was highly surprised to find no safety signage anywhere warning visitors about helmets
After the tremor, I walked back to my vehicle, went away for the day and came back later on in the day but this time i grabbed my mountain bike helmet, and went back inside. There were easily 100 people around and inside the cliffs, and not a single person was wearing head protection—most likely because they had no idea how easily these cliffs crumble.
Tips for future visitors:
• Be aware of your surroundings: These cliffs are stunning but made of loose gravel, silt, and clay. They are inherently unstable.Consider safety gear: If you have a bike or climbing helmet in your car, I highly recommended to wear it when entering the narrow ravines even if the land owners doesn't. please remember it is a rugged, wild environment—enter with caution!
