Bute Park: beautiful nature, monks, stones and carved animals

点评：We walked through Bute Park from the University end down toward the castle. We came in through the tree-lined gates off Corbett Road, right by the glass atrium of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
Almost straight away we spotted a tall, dark brown wooden post. It was a sculptured totem or millenary marker that apparently marks old Bute Estate boundaries and historic tree plantings. It felt a bit mysterious standing there among the trees.
A few minutes further on we reached the Summerhouse Café. It is a lovely octagonal Victorian building designed by William Burges. Ideal place for a quick refreshment.
Carrying on south we came to the stone foundations of the old Blackfriars Friary. You can clearly make out the outlines of the walls and rooms of this 13th-century Dominican monastery, which was destroyed in 1538 during the Dissolution. The short stone wall that now surrounds the site was put up after the 3rd Marquess of Bute had the ruins excavated in the late 19th century. Next to it there’s a small tiled model showing how the whole place looked in the 14th century, which helps bring the layout to life.
We also noticed the wild garlic growing around there. Local stories say the herbs are descendants of ones the monks used to grow.
Near the southern end stands the Gorsedd Stone Circle, put up in 1899 specially for the National Eisteddfod of Wales. The circle of standing stones was meant to evoke ancient Druidic traditions and give the Eisteddfod a sense of ceremony and continuity with the past.
We stopped again at Brodies Coffee, which is built right into the castle ramparts and is a good spot for a quick coffee or something cold before finishing the walk.
We finished by coming out near the Animal Wall. carved animals like lions, bears, seals and others sit along the top of the wall in various poses, some looking out, some looking down. It is a quirky and memorable detail that softens the grandeur of the castle grounds.
Overall it was a peaceful and layered walk with just enough history and atmosphere to make it feel worthwhile.
