Secret passages, a blinded duke and wartime hymns

点评：We started at the South Gate and walked onto the Castle Green. The castle is built on the top of an old Roman fort, which later became a Norman castle, and in the 1800s the 3rd Marquess of Bute turned it into this wild Gothic fantasy with his architect William Burges. We heard he was so private he had secret passages built so he could move around without seeing staff or visitors.
We stayed at ground level by the Norman keep. The story that stuck with us was Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror’s eldest son. After losing the crown to his brother Henry I he was locked up here for 26 years. Local tale says Henry even had him blinded after a failed escape, and he spent the rest of his life in the dark.
Inside the apartments we went into the Banqueting Hall. Burges was a real character! He apparently took opium and turned up to meetings in medieval robes. When the family complained about the cost he just said he was building for eternity, not for the accountants. Above the big fireplace there is a carving of an earlier escape from the castle, and the door handles are little bronze lions and beasts.
Last we walked through the wartime tunnels inside the old walls. During the Blitz up to 1,800 people sheltered in there. They had bunks, a canteen, and people used to sing Welsh hymns so loud they drowned out the bombs. You can still see old posters and faint pencil marks left by children counting the explosions outside.
A straightforward, interesting walk with some strong stories, and easy to do without climbing anything steep.
