The Castle did not Measure up to our Expectations
白金汉宫的点评
点评：Somehow we thought with purchasing tickets to the castle we would have prime viewing for the Changing of the Guard, well, not so much! But we’ll get to that down the page. First we’ll start with Buckingham Palace.
As you walk down Pall Mall Street you see Buckingham Palace in all its glory and you think to yourself, “This is going to be great!” As you approach Buckingham Castle you enter from the back and then walk through the Castle. Having been in the past few years to Versailles I think our expectations were a bit too high. There is art and grandeur, but not quite on the level of Versailles nor what we thought we were going to see based on the admission price. Even the gardens were anticlimactic and truthfully could use some tending to. Changing of the Guard was scheduled on the day we visited but having a ticket to the Palace gives you no advantage to a viewing. So we saw what we could and did our research to come back for a better viewing.
We saw the next Changing of the Guard was two days later and for the best viewing site we scoped out a sidewalk position in front of St. James Palace about 1k from Buckingham Palace. We arrived 75 minutes ahead of the scheduled Changing of the Guard which allowed us to get a prime sidewalk spot and about 30 minutes before the actual ceremony we were able to see the soldiers lining up and getting into place as they march from St. James to Buckingham Palace. As they line up they begin to play music and then as they march you can follow them to the Buckingham Castle. This is by far a better experience than lining up four deep at Buckingham Castle for barely any view as the actual changing of the guard takes place behind the castle gates.
TL;DR, Skip Buckingham Palace, line up at St James Palace to see the soldiers assemble for Changing of the Guard, and watch them as they ready to march to Buckingham Castle.
