点评:A fantastic experience day if you want to step out of your comfort zone a bit in a safe and secure space!
Me and a friends took on the Big 5 recently at How Stean Gorge and had a terrific time and we were in group by ourselves which as perfect (although groups sizes go roughly up to 12 or so).
Anyhow, we couldn't recommend this experience highly enough.
Even despite arriving to hear we couldn't do the Canoeing due to windy weather conditions, we still had a blast. And due to this How Stean Gorge's team, effectively reorganize the day based on other the weather to get the most out of longer sessions doing the Caving, Via ferrata, Abseiling and Gorge walking.
The Gorge walking was definitely one of our highlights after a tiring day. Getting to swim through the gorge a bit and cool down was very unique, something I've never done before, but would definitely do again!
Our instructor Tom was very attentive to people needs and provided great safety guidance and knowledge of the activities and locations, so we all got the best out of each experience as well being more than happy to chat, answer questions we had and joke around a bit with us lads! 😅
The cafe is very nice too and has great views of the gorge for those who won't part take in activities. I would highly recommend a visit even just for that...
In terms of what to bring (as we were unsure to begin with and this may help others).
Abseiling/ Gorge walking - Cheap disposable or old trainers will suffice, nothing too heavy and some swim trunks / underwear to go under the wetsuit (which is provided) is enough. Wet suit type socks are provided too so no need to worry on spare socks for the activity. Just a spare pair of clothes for after and shower stuff is essential.
Caving - Chances are you won't get too wet in caving except for socks or trousers (although shorts are best underneath the caving suit provided I think).
A couple of us did attempt a more adventurous route which will get you a bit wetter underneath your cave suite so a spare pair of shorts and underwear etc should be needed. You do also get given a caving suit, helmet and wellies as part of this which keep you pretty clean / dry. Maybe bring workman gloves if you fancy.
Via Ferrata - just comfortable clothes for the weather which you won't be too hot or cold in while climbing (some of it is quite physical) and sport trainers. Joggers may be best if it's not too hot. I got quite a lot of bruises on my knees from one particular section but other than that you are just using your hands and feet to traverse walls and clearings.
All in all, a great day!!! I will try and go back for sure! 👌
