点评:This was the absolute reason we came to Sandakan, to get to see up close and not in a cage as in a zoo, the orangutan and we certainly did that.
The highlight of the trip came at the end of our excursion and as we were leaving. But let me first give my experience.
You should absolutely hire a guide. They know what they are doing, you pay them at the end of the trip and they get you past trying to figure out all the finer details such as tickets etc. You are treated like a VIP and pay half the price of a commercial tour and you are in a private car.
The only let down of our experience was you must first put away all of your belongings into a free locker. I totally understand the need for that so as to not interfere with the welfare of the orangutans. Just wish I knew that and my guide/driver who was very knowledgeable let this occur and it slipped his mind. We are human and he made an otherwise error free full day at a minimal price. We could have very easily left our additional bags in the car. Ok, over it. Mistakes happen.
We then walked to the platform and along the way, he spotted some silver leaf monkeys and that was cool. But then my heart dropped as I saw an orangutan mama and baby maneuvering around and it was pure bliss. I was 0/2 in orangutan sightings in the wild. First, we missed out on the orangutan sighting on a river cruise in Bongawan and along the Kinabantangan. I certainly didn’t want to go 0/3 and assuredly, this is a sure thing, right? We thought it was cool to see them in the trees and not necessarily on the platform. The platform feeding itself was amazing. I don’t care if people say it’s just a zoo. So what? This is what I wanted to see, orangutans not in a cage or limited space such as a zoo has to offer, but rather a place in which they are well cared for and have a humongous space to roam. What was not so exciting, but very realistic is the alpha male eating alone, the mother orangutan and babies cuddling up to its mother having to get scraps. This was shocking but so real.
We then were led to another section where some orangutans were playing and also feeding. Some took the liberty to mate and it was very aggressive, but again all natural. I’m so glad my kids are so young so they didn’t question the orangutans in action hahahaha.
This section was not a highlight. The highlight I thought was the tree spotting. The highlight now occurred. I heard yelling and was a bit taken aback. A keeper was yelling to move clear. There was a runaway orangutan and they were trying to track it down. The majestic animal walked right past me on the walking platform. I dared not touch the huge creature and it stared us down all the way. It was a bit frightening because I immediately though of the welfare of my young children, but this was not complete in the wild so I figured the animal was used to humans and would not attack. But the possibility was there and that was the cause of the alarm and also elated feelings. That right there made my day and I am a happy camper! It walked right past us and our eyes met and we stared at each other as we walked right past each other both of us wondering if either would do something. That was a bit intense and exhilarating.
The crowds were mild that day, the weather was quite miserable, the mosquitos were at full force so come well prepared. The fee is very minimal especially for the experience and memories you will always have. This is a must do and our #2 reason to come to Sandakan besides the Kinabatangan river cruise.
