点评:We've been touring Japan for a month and we'd rate the Dolls Museum in Kanazawa as one of our most unexpected finds, a real gem. Museums can in general be very good, but they can also be uninviting and unengaging, especially small ones. When I first heard there was a dolls museum in Kanazawa my heart didn't leap, I pictured a dusty collection of old and drab dolls locked away in glass-fronted display cabinets.
My imagination could not have been more wrong. Housed in a beautifully restored two-storey teahouse, the building alone is lovely, very inviting. And then there are the dolls - except to this Brit, they were nothing like the collection of a child's play things I'd imagined. As we moved from room to room, each collection of what were works of art was colourful, vibrant and beautifully displayed - with almost everything out in the open, not in a cabinet. This we felt was so trusting of the owner, that visitors would treat the collection with respect - and not touch (or worse!). Not having glass between you and the displayed object allows you to connect with and experience the exhibit much more fully, it was a real joy.
One room in particular struck us, where in the middle of the room a long table had been fashioned out of connected sections of low wooden tables, shaped to represent the main island (we think?) of Japan. Set on these tables was a large collection of dolls, placed on the 'map' according to region they came from. It was such an arresting display.
It was quiet when we visited and the young woman working that day whose name we sadly didn't get was able to take some time to guide us in the various rooms, she was delightful. The owner was also present for part of our visit, and he also took some time to share a number of insights with us. Thank you again to both of you!
This tucked away little museum is an absolute delight, a real treasure, and we'd strongly recommend a visit during your stay in Kanazawa.
