点评:Last year I was having a bit of an existential conversation with myself about what my purpose is. In the time since then I decided to go for my divemaster certification, but was still trying to decide where. That’s when somebody recommended going to Nusa Penida. She gave me the names of a couple shops, and I emailed them. I heard back from Purple very quickly. We set up a time to talk and discuss goals and purpose in relation to the program. I used my summer holiday (I’m a secondary school film and humanities teacher) to do an intensive 5 ½ weeks of diving and learning. Their dive guides are also mostly instructors, or in the process of becoming one. It was really cool to see divemasters there who came up through working on the boats to becoming a scuba instructor from the island. The boat crews were fabulous and good humoured and generous.
Nusa Penida has some challenging currents when you first experience them, and I felt like a beginner getting used to my buoyancy and new equipment. The divemasters were beyond helpful with advice and feedback, and were patient yet direct. I appreciated the seriousness that they treat their relationships with the customers, offering encouragement, engagement, and enthusiasm for the environment they’ve just experienced. I tried to borrow what I could from each one.
The dive center runs a pretty tight ship, offering refresher courses and Discover Scuba Diving activities, to open water, advanced open water, rescue diver, divemaster, and the instructor development course. The classroom has a fantastic view, plus a pool, and of course full scuba equipment and tanks. And of course the diving. Every day diving and improving, building confidence to help a panicked diver, or packing an extra mask just in case, or some other tip or tool that moved me from struggling to streamlining.
The people who run and work at Purple and warm, kind and incredibly patient. I cherish every bit of feedback, and have already started thinking about IDC next.
