Overall, we had a really nice day at Pleasurewood Hills. Our group consisted of four adults (including two 18-year-olds and one person using a mobility scooter) and a 17-year-old. Despite some rides being aimed at younger visitors, there was still plenty for everyone to enjoy.
We purchased four eco cups for cold drinks (£3.95 each, with refills at £2.50) and I also bought a tea refill cup (£7.50 with unlimited refills). We found these to be excellent value for money.
We used both an Access Card and a Blue Light Card. Staff checked the relevant proof and issued disability access wristbands on arrival, which was straightforward and appreciated. We arrived just before the park opened at 10am and there was virtually no queue. The park closed at 4pm and, although we had originally planned to leave around 2:30pm, we stayed longer so my daughter could watch the bird show.
Both the bird show and the sea lion show were fantastic. It was clear that the animals appeared content, healthy and well cared for, which was very important to us. The app was also useful, showing ride wait times so you could plan your day accordingly.
Unfortunately, there were several issues that prevented me from rating the park higher than 3 stars.
After parking (which costs £3 for the day and can be paid when purchasing tickets), the route from the car park to the entrance involves a stony surface. My mobility scooter became stuck in the loose stones near the entrance and my family had to help me get moving again. There was no warning about this, and I imagine many other mobility scooter users may experience the same problem.
The toilets were also disappointing. I used a disabled toilet which was in need of a deep clean. The door would not lock, the woodwork was rotting, and the toilet itself was heavily stained. On a positive note, there was plenty of toilet paper and hand soap available.
Accessibility around the park could also be improved. Many of the paths were uneven, and when passing some of the busier rides, queues often spilled across the pathways. This forced me onto sandy or muddy ground with my mobility scooter. While this isn’t entirely the park’s fault, simple measures such as clearer queue markings or railings along grassed areas could help keep pathways accessible.
It was good to see some newer attractions, but the majority of the rides are very dated. I remember riding many of them when I visited as a child over 30 years ago. The water slide also had visible green algae in the water, which suggested it could benefit from a thorough clean and improved maintenance.
The train includes a designated disabled area, but I wasn’t entirely sure how it was intended to be used. I didn’t feel comfortable leaving my mobility scooter unattended while riding, particularly as staff are understandably focused on operating the attraction safely.
Overall, I feel the park would benefit from significant investment and modernisation. With some major upgrades, it could become far more competitive with larger theme parks such as Alton Towers and Thorpe Park. That said, considering the ticket price, we were happy with the value we received and enjoyed our day.
If you’re looking for a family day out while visiting the Great Yarmouth area, Pleasurewood Hills is well worth considering. We purchased our tickets online the evening before and received a discounted price, which made the visit even better value.
