Georgia's Grand Canyon - Great Visit
Providence Canyon State Park的点评
点评：Since I was a child, I had heard about Georgia's Grand Canyon, and growing up in NW Florida, I did not realize how close we actually were to it. However, most of our travels to Atlanta and other stops in Georgia and the North Carolina mountains are via the Interstates. This time while my wife and I were traveling to Greenville, SC, I altered course through SW Georgia to make a visit to see this eastern anomaly to erosion.
My wife and I easily arrived at the canyon around 12:30 shortly after crossing the border from Alabama. We parked with ample space and entered the small visitor's center/museum to pay a nominal fee, use the restroom and begin our hike. The VC like half the hike is on the rim where you get great views overlooking the canyon. The other half of the hike is in the canyon where you can hike into multiple different amphitheaters where you are surrounded by the canyon walls above you. The entire hike is 2.6 miles with 239 feet of elevation gain and on average takes 90 minutes to complete which was exactly our time, finishing just after 2:00.
While you begin on the rim, you quickly descend to the bottom and go from thick trees to open sand. From here you have about 4 different options to hike into various canyon amphitheaters. The first one we hiked into still had water flowing on the floor and the rain seeps through the ground and emerges from the canyon walls continuing the process of erosion. After a short walk, we turned around and enter the second canyon that was dry. Here we nearly made it to the rim and could see the various colors in each canyon ridge.
Soon we had enough of looking up and proceeded on the trail to the climb out of the canyon to the rim. While it is enough elevation to feel it, the hike up was mild at best easy for almost any level of hiker. At the top you walk around an old automobile junkyard where several old cars, like the canyon, have been left to rust away in the weather. Shortly after this you reach the rim for the great and expansive views of the canyon below as clay cliffs emerge from forested floors. Unlike the desert western canyons, the juxtaposition of canyon walls and thick forest make for amazing pictures. It is so wild to see this forest emerging from the canyon which will eventually stabilize it. Ironically, it was the remove of the trees on this hillside that created the canyon as heavy rains quickly eroded the bare hillside. Still today the walk along the rim is amazing and the best place to get great pictures. Here there are various overlooks, and each seems to get better as you continue your hike.
Shortly after passing a park along the entrance road, you will eventually come to the end of the trail and back to the visitor's center. It is a unique experience in the Southeast, so I do highly recommend the visit. I will say while Providence Canyon in Georgia has a much larger canyon and better overlooking views, than its nearest SE relative, Red Bluff in Mississippi, but Red Bluff is much more colorful. Still, I really loved Providence Canyon and highly recommend you take time to make the visit.
