Edmonton’s Version of Vancouver’s Granville Street
怀特大道的点评
点评：Named in 1891 after Sir William Whyte, Superintendent of the CPRs western division from 1886 to 1897, and part of the Old Strathcona neighbourhood, Whyte Avenue has evolved into Edmonton’s premier arts, culture and entertainment district. Beginning in the mid-1990s, and through the early 2000s, Whyte Avenue developed a strong reputation for its nightlife scene. In fact, when I first visited Edmonton in 2002, one of my friends made it a point to bring me here exactly because it was “very popular.” We didn’t hang around for the night crowd, but I do remember having a meal at Chianti Café – a very over-rated Italian restaurant.
Fast-forward 24 years (eek that makes me feel old), and my partner and I find ourselves in Old Strathcona and Whyte Avenue. We came to this area primarily to patronize the Wee Book Inn and visit their resident kitty! After doing so (the bookstore was kind of disappointing), we decided to explore a bit more of the famous Whyte Avenue. Now, contrary to the previous TA report, which characterizes Whyte Avenue in unflattering terms, we enjoyed this culturally rich area. In fact, I remarked to my partner that Whyte Avenue reminded me of a hybrid version of Vancouver’s Granville and Robson Streets: Granville because of the high number of heritage buildings; Robson Street because of the numerous boutique shops, restaurants and bars. Actually, now that I think about it some more, you could say Whyte Avenue is a hybrid of Granville, Robson and Commercial because of all the lovely murals painted on some of the buildings.
We didn’t spend a whole lot of time here – just under two hours – but it was enough to wet our whistles, so to speak. The heritage buildings, unique shops, public artworks, and attractive restaurants are enough to demand many a return. Plus, it’s always fun to feel hip and cool amongst Whyte Avenue’s bohemian vibe!
