点评:Ottawa is an amazing place that sits at the center of Canadian politics which provides it a world stage; however, nothing would be here if it weren't for the Rideau Canal. Between 1826 and 1832, the British built a 126 mile slackwater, uses dams to raise water levels to smooth rapids, canal that has a total of 46 locks that lift boats 272 feet from the Ottawa River to the Rideau Lakes and then drop them 164 feet to the Cataraqui River and Kingston, Ontario in an effort to transport goods and warships between Kingston (Great Lakes) and Montreal (Atlantic Ocean). In the War of 1812, the goal for the US was to gain control of the St. Lawrence River and prevent British ship movement between Kingston and Montreal. All locks today are operated by hand as they would have been over 200 years ago, and the canal is 1 of 22 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Canada.
The canal runs through the center of Ottawa in the Col. By Valley between Upper Town with Parliament Hill and Lower Town. It exists here because of certain geologic and geographic conditions. First, the Ottawa River extends navigable for most shipping from Montreal to the Chutes Chaudière just above the Rideau Canal entrance. You then have the Rideau River that extends deeply into the interior near Kingston that is very navigable except for its mouth just downriver from the Rideau Canal with a 35' drop at Rideau Falls. This makes the natural ravine between the bluffs above the Ottawa River as the ideal place for the canal entrance and the Ottawa Locks. It is then the building of the canal here that leads to the founding of a camp community ByTown which is eventually elevated by Queen Victoria to the Canadian capital of Ottawa. So, what you see here is a foundational piece of Canadian history and culture which makes it an essential visit for any Ottawa vacation, and it is totally free to visit.
We visited the canal as a part of our walking tour through Ottawa late on a Labor Day Sunday visit after seeing Notre Dame Basilica. It is a short from there to Kiweki Point with beautiful views and then down to the Ottawa River entrance. Here you will sit about 10' above the Ottawa River at the base of the first 8 locks, Ottawa Locks, that move you up the 45 feet of bluffs. Here you can cross the canal over the wooden locks of Douglas Fir and make you way up the steps from lock to lock. Fortunately, we were able to watch a boat climb the locks as a crew four worked to open each by hand. Between the incredible weather and actual seeing a boat use the canal, this was a true highlight of not only our Ottawa trip but the entire Canadian trip, everyone in our group loved this experience.
Midway up we paused to visit the ByTown Museum to truly under the historic roots of Ottawa. Please see my post and know we highly recommend that as well. We then exited and continued to watch the boat climb. The entire way the scenery along the canal simply was more and more picturesque. We even enjoyed overlooking the canal from Major's Hill Park. Finally, if you thought the canal was beautiful during the day, we also got to see it at night.
Again, this is an Ottawa and Canadian highlight that you absolutely must see when you are in the capital city.
