Bucket List Geographic Oddity and Experience but Isolated
Four Corners Monument的点评
点评：From my earliest days, I have loved maps and their interesting boundaries which has also made 4 corners a kind of bucket list for me since childhood. So, when I was taking a group friends to Grand Canyon National Park and Page with a side trip to Monument Valley, this was a must see for the itinerary. I will say it is still quite a way from Monument Valley almost 100 miles and another one way 90-minute drive. However, there is nothing really close to Four Corners. Still where can you stand with one foot in 4 different jurisdictions, true geographic oddity.
In March when it closes at 5:00 PM, we arrived at 4:36 PM, so be sure to check times as closing adjust with daylight. The good news is it is free and coming near the end of the day, there were not many people there, nearly no vendors and probably 20 people in line to get pictures. Parking was easy and we rushed to get in line. Waiting in line we got our bearings which is one of the neat things about the geometric space.
The Plaza around the marker is a square which is appropriate. Each state then has a diagonal wall which provides places for tribe vendors but also enclosure of the space. The corners, where the walls come together, are openings for people to enter as well as the state lines which then meet in the middle and give each of the four states their own triangle as well as a viewing area to look down at the intersection (good place to have someone outside your group take a picture). In each state corner are two flag poles, one for the state flag and one that appeared to be a Navaho tribal flag. Inside the triangular state viewing areas is a circle in whose center the actual intersection lies.
We visited on a beautiful sunny day with no clouds and good wind for the flags, so perfect for pictures. It then came our turn, and we got our pictures both as a group and couples. From my phone time stamp, we got in line at 4:37 and we were done taking our last picture at 4:48 so even 20 people is not a significant line. We then left. I loved it, but I do understand not everyone loved it enough to drive the additional 3 hours (total both ways). You will have to decide that yourself. However, I loved the experience, and I loved the way the design incorporated so many geographic shapes in its design.
